The play instinct is part of every animals psyche. Every single animal plays, whether these are the young animals which play simulating the adult behavior or adult animals, playing around with their kids or mates. For pets, play time is more important as this fights the boredom, and the stress of being cooped up in a cage. This is specially true of birds.
Toys and pets go together, whatever the size of the pet. Doesn’t matter what the pet is, dogs and cats play with balls, hamsters run around their wheel, and parrots like to have something to peck on, preferably something hanging down on the cage. These break the monotony of the cage.
